You may know a lot about the decorative and tough stones like granite and marble. Such natural materials are often found as floor tile and on kitchen countertops. Granite and marble, however, are not the only stones that work well for both beauty and function. Onyx, a type of agate, is also commonly used as tile and countertop material. Like marble and granite, it possesses strength and has its own distinct beauty that may be just what your home needs. In this article, we'll look at a few unique ways to employ onyx in your home design.

Onyx Sink Basins
A necessary, common item in every home bathroom is the sink. But why have a plain old style of sink when there are so many more choices? Onyx can be a subtle way to bring nature into your bathroom but still maintain a clean, polished appearance. It's not as glitzy a stone as granite but possesses more of the softness of marble. The patterning of onyx, however, is quite different from either stone. It can almost resemble the inside of an abalone shell. Onyx works well in traditional settings but would blend in with a modern, spa-inspired master bath too.

Onyx Water Fountains
If you want to transform your backyard into an oasis, a water fountain is a must-have. Tranquil and attractive, an onyx water fountain brings peace visually as well. The garden is not the only setting for a fountain though. Improve the curbside appeal of your home and place a water fountain by the main entrance or as a focal point in the front yard. Bring the lulling sound of water indoors as well. A foyer or entryway, for instance, would make a great spot for such a decorative element. Or sit in your sun room and listen to the steady trickling while you read or work. Onyx fountains come in a variety of designs and are often handmade so each product is unique.

Onyx Floor Lamps
An onyx floor lamp is a way to both light up a room and add visual interest. Light emanates from the stone, creating an amber glow that adds warmth and atmosphere to a room. Stone lamps have an Old World feel that may make you feel like you're in a palace or manor. The grand presence of onyx floor lamps works well for the cathedral ceilings of many modern living rooms. With such a space to fill, these lamps can be an anchor for the room and also draw the eye upwards, giving attention to the high ceilings. Or add a pair to your dining room to create a relaxing, romantic dining experience.

While you may be tempted to stick with granite or marble because of their popularity and availability, look into onyx as an alternative. Use it for its functionality in the bathroom as a sink or as a floor lamp in your living or dining room. Or, take advantage of its decorative properties in the form of a water fountain for the front yard or back garden. No doubt the warm coloring and flexibility of onyx will soon make it your favorite stone.
