As technology advances, everything becomes more complicated. As a developer, you find yourself spending more and more time on even the smallest things. When it comes to web design, you could spend hours on a single web page in a text editor, and the result would look something similar to a 5 year old's design. As better and better technology comes out, the old methods of design become virtually useless.

Designing in simple HTML with a simple text editor used to be the norm, but it has rapidly become obsolete. While it still remains the best way to learn HTML, it is by no means the best way to design a decent looking web page. In fact, it is the worst way. Web page editors and IDE's have overtaken simple text editor design, and without a good IDE you might as well kiss the idea of creating your own website goodbye.

There are multitudes of web page editors out there today, with more and more released all the time. The modern editor is incredibly advanced and simple to use. These editors nearly eliminate the need to even know HTML at all. Some even have the power to create complex back end systems for you.

Without knowing HTML, PHP, or javascript, you can design a professional web page that would have blown minds a mere 5 years ago. The advance of technology has overtaken everything, and web development is no exception.
