Getting Started With Smartphone App Development Empty Getting Started With Smartphone App Development

Post  Admin Fri Jul 08, 2011 11:46 pm

Smartphone app development is probably the most heated sector that developers are most interested in today. It's lucrative no doubt, because the number of smart phone users is exploding and so is the need for every company to have its own mobile application. Of course, there are still plenty of choices to make and things to learn.

Most companies today build applications for multiple platforms, so as to cater to customers who may be using any one of the devices. This means a company may have to build separate applications for Apple's iOS, Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows Mobile/Phone, Nokia's Symbian and RIM's Blackberry OS, among others. Let's take a closer look and see how things are usually done when a company wants an application developed.

According to market share, the most popular ones today where the applications market is massive and growing are Android, iOS and Blackberry. So a company that's just wading into mobile marketing can start with these three. Android is open source, the applications are written in Java and there are no fees associated, so it makes sense to begin with Android.

Equally important is an application for Apple's devices (iPod, iPhone and iPad). It needs a registered developer able to work with iOS and Objective-C programming. Since the application has to be good enough to be accepted and listed in the App Store, the developer has to have experience with building applications that have landed up in the store.

Blackberry applications can be developed in Java or a web development environment. Web development is easier because it need less coding and developers can simply use visual studio. This is also possible when developing applications for Windows Mobile with visual studio, or for iOS apps using the Interface Builder that comes in the SDK.

Regardless of which and how many platforms the company intends to create applications for, smartphone app development is a high stakes game and the rewards are just as big as the risks. If the offering isn't good enough, smart phone users will surely reject it. The key issue is to get it done by an expert who knows how applications are built, tested and distributed.
