Steps To Assigning Static IP Address In Windows Pcs
It is more beneficial to connect all of your computers and other devices by assigning a specific IP address to them because in case of DHCP, each of the connected computers request and are automatically assigned an IP address at the boot up time. It becomes annoying to find out the IP address of each machine while troubleshooting your network. It can also result in address conflicts.
When you provide specific static IP addresses to individual computers, there will be no issues with IP address conflict and you will be able to quickly identify which computer has what IP address. Mentioned below is the process of doing so in various Windows versions.
Windows7 – In order to change an IP address of a computer in Windows 7, go to the start menu search box and type network and sharing and when a window comes up; select the option network and sharing center. When it opens, click change adapter settings option. Then select properties by right clicking on the local adapter. In the properties window, highlight the item internet protocol version4 and click on properties. Now choose use the following IP and provide a correct IP, default gateway and subnet mask corresponding with your network setup including the preferred and DNS addresses. The home network by using a class C network configuration and Google DNS is now setup. Check the option validates settings upon exit so that Windows can detect the problems and you can avail an appropriate tech support to fix the problem. Now click OK, close the properties window of the network connection and type ipconfig on the command prompt to see if the network adapter settings are changed successfully.
Windows Vista – Changing the IP from DHCP to static address is quite similar to the one we have seen for Windows7 but reaching the correct location is a bit diverse. In Vista, you have to open Start menu, right click on Network and choose properties. Once network sharing center opens, click on manage network connections, right click the network adapter you want, click on properties and highlight the internet protocol version 4 and click on its properties button. Here you need to change the IP, default gateway, subnet mask and DNS server address and click ok once done, close the local area properties, type ipconfig on the command prompt to check if it is done.
Windows XP – To set static IP in XP, select properties by right clicking on my network places. Here, right click on the adapter, choose properties, highlight internet protocol item and click on its properties. Change the IP, subnet, and gateway and DNS server as usual and click on ok. After this, close the properties, type ipconfig on the command prompt to see if it's done.
If you have any difficulty in changing the settings, you can avail a cost effective computer tech support and get this done by the experts. Assigning a specific IP address to each computer make troubleshooting the network connection problems easier to perform if you have a small network in your office or at home.
